Plum Kisses!

Every fall season, designers all over the runway showcase the bold lip theme. This year, the plum lip look was all over Christian Siriano’s Fall 2012 Collection- and it was paired beautifully with minimalistic and neutral outfits.  We love the contrast of the dramatic lips and the clean-cut lines!

At NYX, we love wearing a bright bold lip year round, but something about the slightly chilly weather and the slow wardrobe shift to scarves and boots beckons us to reach for our rich plum, purple, and merlot lip shades. There are a wide variety of NYX lipsticks, lip liners, and lip glosses that can be used individually or combined to create this deep, rich look. We had so much fun testing out all the different NYX shades, and found so many creative color combinations to achieve this look.

Taking a cue from the runway, the plum lip is best paired with a clean makeup look, which will really make your lips pop! Here are some of our favorite looks from the runway and how you can achieve it using your favorite NYX lip products.

Get this seductive look in one easy step with our Round Lipstick in the color Bruised (LSS555). Check out the NYX Face Chart below to see details on how we achieved this affordable look.

To achieve the Ombre effect like the model above, fill in your lips with Matte Lipstick in Merlot (MLS16). Then, create a thick outline on your lips with our Round Lipstick in Bruised (LSS555) straight from the tube (unless you need more control with a lip brush). And BLEND! Your finger will work just fine for blending, but it may take quite a few dabs to achieve the perfect proportion of light-to-dark. This is how we put together a whole look around the ombre plum lip:

For a simpler, no-fuss look, we love pairing our Mechanical Lip Pencil in Plum (MPL16) with our Round Lipstick in Violet Ray (LSS561). The NYX shades are a touch lighter, but achieve the same glamorous look. You can finish your lips with a clear gloss (LG103) if you prefer the glossy look; otherwise it is completely optional. We recreated the look with just a handful of NYX products.

Keeping in line with the runway looks, make sure to pair this bold lip with an outfit based on basic neutral colors. The lip, after all, is your statement look and shouldn’t try to compete with the rest of your outfit.

We loved playing around with the darker colors in our lip collection- we want all of you to enjoy the different ranges and play around with the variety of shades we carry too! There are so many creative looks that can be achieved just by using a few affordable products. Please share with us your favorite NYX Plum Lip combinations for the fall!

Noveau Cheap is in the Goddess Spotlight in October!

It’s that time of the month for us to shine the Goddess Spotlight on one of our favorite beauty bloggers! This month we wanted to get to know blogger Nouveau Cheap!

Read all about her and visit her blog when you have the chance! Rely on her beauty picks for your next beauty adventure!

NYX:  Tell us….What inspired you to become a beauty blogger?

NC: I’ve always been obsessed with beauty products, since I was a young girl. A few years ago, I worked in an office with lots of incredible women and I earned a reputation with my colleagues as the go-to person for beauty advice. One particular colleague always urged me to start a blog to share my tips and tricks with the world, and one day back in 2009 I finally took the plunge.

NYX: Where do you find your inspiration from?

NC: Absolutely without a doubt, I get my inspiration from my readers. Their kindness, generosity and humor inspire me daily to be a better blogger.

NYX: How did you come up with the blog alias “Nouveau Cheap”?

NC: I came up with that name when I was trying to think of a blog title that would convey that I’m all about affordable cosmetics, but in a chic or stylish way. You don’t have to give up on being stylish just because you’re on a budget, and that philosophy is at the forefront of everything I do on my blog. So after playing around with different titles, I came up with Nouveau Cheap, which is a play on the term “Nouveau Chic”. The term “Nouveau Chic” is defined as “The quality or state of being stylish; fashionableness.” I think “Nouveau Cheap” is a fun play on that.

NYX: Where do you see yourself and your blog going within the next 5 years?

NC: That’s an interesting question because, with the way technology is developing and changing, who knows if blogs will be relevant in five years? I certainly hope so and, if they are, I’d like to be doing exactly what I’m doing now, but hopefully I’ll be much better at it!

NYX: What is the ONE makeup product that you can’t live without?

NC: Just one? Oh boy, I would have to say eyebrow pencil. I look like a freak before I fill my brows!

NYX: Dish and tell us what your NYX story is!

NC: I remember seeing my first NYX display almost ten years ago at Long’s Drugs (a drugstore chain in California that sadly closed its doors a few years ago). I remember thinking, “Ooooh, look at all these pretty, bold colors and this sleek black packaging!” I wanted to buy everything in that display. I think the very first thing I bought from NYX was a bright pink shimmery eyeshadow, which is kind of crazy because I can’t even wear pink shadows (pinks don’t work with my skintone). But I just had to have that eyeshadow and my impulses to buy NYX products are just as strong today!

NYX: What is your favorite NYX product?

NC: If you had asked me that a few months ago, I probably would have said one of the zillions of NYX nail polishes I’ve purchased over the years.  But about a month ago, I picked up a Matte Lipstick in Whipped Caviar and I have to say, that lipstick has quickly stolen my heart. It’s the perfect pinky-brown matte lip color and I love it so much I have a hard time wearing anything else these days. Oh! And I also really, really love the matte red blush in the Crimson Amulet palette.

NYX: At what age did you start wearing makeup?

NC: I think I started wearing more than just fruity-flavored lip balms at around 14. I remember wearing blue mascara and not much else (hey, it was the 80s) for a while, and then I moved on to purple eyeshadows. I had a thing for purple shadows throughout much of my teen years.

NYX: What fashion and beauty trend are you looking forward to for the Fall?

NC: I love the rich earthtone and jewel-tone shades that always seem to reappear during the fall. I also love deeper red and berry lip colors, and of course matte lipsticks are always a must for fall. As for fashion, I’m obsessed with turtlenecks and when it’s cold enough here in Southern California to actually wear them, I’m one happy girl.

NYX: If you could be anything in the world, what would you be?

NC: I have always secretly wanted to be a radio DJ. I think it would be a blast to be the first voice people hear in the morning on their way to work, and I would love to make people laugh at a time when most people are a little grouchy. As someone who is not a morning person, I know how much it can improve my mood when I hear something really funny on the radio, so it would be awesome to be able to do that for others.
